Francesco Candido began his dream in the north of Salento in 1929, between Guagnano and San Donaci, reclaiming 250 hectares of marshland and transforming it into a vineyard. Francesco’s son, Alessandro, took the reins in 1978, having grown up around the winery. Alessandro continued honouring his father’s winemaking traditions, bringing new experiences, techniques and technology to the family business. The vineyards of Francesco Candido were originally home to the native vines of the Salento area, including Negramaro, Primitivo and Aleatico, which have since been joined by imported varieties such as Montepulciano, Chardonnay and Syrah. Now, Francesco’s grandchildren walk and work these vineyards, honouring the promise made to their grandfather, never asking the earth for more than it can give.
