The Winery

In 1866, the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, acquired a vineyard in Barolo and named it Tenimenti de Barolo e Fontanafredda. In 1931, following deterioration by phylloxera, the estate was sold to Italy’s oldest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Sienna. The vines were then replanted between 1940 and 1999 using the significant clonal variation of older vineyards (otherwise known as massal selection). In 2008, Fontanafredda was bought by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, returning to Piedmontese ownership after 77 years. Today, Fontanafredda is the largest continuous wine estate in the Langhe.
