Drew's Tasting Note

Intense aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, black cherries, and plum, with notes of cedar and graphite. Silky smooth tannins lift the layers of ripe black fruits and a lick of liquorice that lingers on the palate long into a delicious, refined finish. Drinkable now, but with exciting cellaring potential.

The Winery

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is the Antinori family's 320-hectare estate in the Bolgheri DOC on the Tuscan coast. The estate lies within the Bolgheri Amphitheatre, a plain encircled by rolling hills facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. This shape creates a distinctive microclimate: cooling breezes descend from the hills at night, slowing ripening and preserving the fruit's aromatic character. The soils are alluvial, ranging from sandy to silty-clay, with deposits of fine gravel known locally as scheletro. The wine, first produced in 1990, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and occasionally Petit Verdot. The label carries the crest of the Della Gherardesca family (the estate's former owners), while the capsule bears the Antinori family's historic emblem.
