The Winery

The Antinori family acquired Tenuta Tignanello in the mid-19th century, though the estate dates back to 1346, when it belonged to the noble Buondelmonti family. It sits in the heart of Chianti Classico, between the Greve and Pesa valleys, across 319 hectares of hillside vineyards. The Tignanello vineyard, 77 hectares on limestone-rich soils at 350-400 metres with a south-western aspect, is the source of one of Italy's original Super Tuscans. First produced in 1970, it was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern Chianti blend to incorporate Cabernet, and one of the first to exclude white grapes entirely. The current blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc has been in use since 1982. The label, designed by Italian graphic artist Silvio Coppola, carries the signature of Piero Antinori's father, Niccolò, placed there by Piero as a tribute to his father's faith in the project.
