The Winery

Axel Pauly trained in Germany, California and New Zealand before returning to take over the family estate in Lieser, in the heart of the Middle Mosel. In 2011, a fire destroyed the production hall; seven weeks later, hail wiped out most of the crop. Together with his wife Sabrina and his parents, he chose to rebuild. Within three years, the estate had earned a second Gault Millau star and been named Rising Estate of the Year on the Mosel. The 10-hectare estate is planted mostly on the grey and blue slate soils of Lieser, which produce wines with greater mineral character than the red slate of neighbouring Bernkastel. Look at the label sideways, and you will see three profiles: Axel's, his father's and his grandfather’s. A detail that shows how deeply this family is rooted in the Mosel.
