The Winery

The Ayala family's connection to winemaking in Briñas, La Rioja, dates back to the 18th century, when Cornelio de Ayala and Manuela Ruiz de Corcuera first settled in the village. The family's great-grandfather, Tomás, acquired a stone house with a working winery in 1853, establishing what would become a multi-generational family business. In 1970, Ramón de Ayala and his wife, Flora, converted the property into a restaurant and began selling their wines under the Viña Santurnia label, produced in the cellars carved directly into the stone beneath the building. They became one of the first producers to obtain the Rioja Denomination of Origin. Today, the winery ages its wines in 500 oak barrels across 440 square metres of underground facilities.
