The Winery

José Sánchez-Cerezo acquired the Casa Castillo estate in Jumilla in 1941, trading wood and esparto grass while planting vines on the side. When plastic put an end to that trade, agriculture took over. In 1991, his son-in-law, Nemesio Vicente, restored the old winery to make wine from the estate’s own grapes, with a clear ambition: to honour Monastrell, the region’s ancestral variety. Today, Nemesio's four children, Guillermina, Julia, Marisol and José Maria, tend 170 hectares of organic bush vines, dry-farmed at 700 metres on the Jumilla plateau, where calcareous sandy soils and barely 350 mm of rain a year push the vines to produce with great intensity and very low yields.
