The Winery

Château de Sales is the largest estate in Pomerol, with 47.6 hectares under vine and property boundaries that have remained almost unchanged since 1578. Four families have owned it: the Sauvanelles, the Desaigues, the de Laages and the Lamberts, with the name changing each time the estate passed through a daughter rather than a son. The Sauvanelles built the current Louis XIII-style château in 1643, and their descendants fought to recover the property after it was seized during the Revolution, buying back all but three hectares. In 2017, 14 cousins took over as co-owners, appointing Marine Treppoz as chair. The blend is predominantly Merlot, grown on gravel and iron-oxide-rich sands.
