Drew's Tasting Note

Ripe red cherries and liquorice on the nose. These notes continue on the palate and combine with goji berries and Victoria plum. Lots of fruit, bright acidity and smooth tannins. Lovely long finish. Great cellaring potential.

The Winery

Gaston Hochar founded Château Musar in 1930, aged just 20, inspired by his travels in Bordeaux and Lebanon's 6,000-year viticultural history in the Bekaa Valley. During the Second World War, Major Ronald Barton of Château Langoa-Barton befriended Gaston in Lebanon, deepening a Bordeaux connection that runs through the estate to this day. Gaston's son Serge became winemaker in 1959, studied under Emile Peynaud and spent 18 years perfecting the Musar red. In 1984, Decanter named him their first “Man of the Year” for continuing to make wine throughout Lebanon's civil war. The estate is now run by Serge's sons, Gaston and Marc. The red blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan; the white is made from Obaideh and Merwah, two ancient indigenous Lebanese varieties. The wines are made with native yeasts, without fining and with minimal sulphur. Musar is a wine like no other.
