Drew's Tasting Note

Complex ripe hedgerow fruit and light floral aromas. Allow time for this wine to breathe, and these aromas will also include cedar and spices. There is a silky elegance, a hint of minerality, and masses of black fruits with a long and layered finish on the palate.

The Winery

The Frescobaldi family has been making wine in Tuscany since the 14th century, making them one of Italy's oldest wine dynasties. Their influence on the modern Tuscan wine industry has been considerable; the family introduced then-unknown varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot to the region as early as 1855. Today, the family's vineyard holdings span nearly 1,000 hectares across nine estates in Tuscany, each with its own distinct terroir and character. This wine comes from Tenuta CastelGiocondo, a hilltop fortress to the southwest of Montalcino, first built around 1100. It was one of just four estates producing Brunello di Montalcino in the early 1800s, and Vittorio Frescobaldi ran it for years before buying it in 1989. Its vineyards, at around 300 metres on free-draining galestro and clay, give a Brunello of notable depth and structure.
