Drew's Tasting Note

A vibrant nose of black cherries and blackberries, with notes of rosemary and spice. A fresh yet full-bodied palate, with those dark berry flavours combining with a touch of balsamic and minerality. A long, complex and expressive finish. Enjoy now and over the next ten years or so.

The Winery

Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli in Bolgheri, when the area was better known for wheat and fruit than for wine. Beginning with just four hectares, the couple released their first vintage in 1987 and gradually shifted their focus towards single-varietal wines, a pioneering move that set the estate apart from its neighbours. By the early 2000s, their three flagship wines had each become monovarietals: Paleo Rosso, a pure Cabernet Franc; Messorio, a pure Merlot; and Scrio, a pure Syrah. Cinzia has run the estate since 2002, farming organically across 24 hectares. The wines are now regarded as some of the finest expressions of their respective varieties anywhere in Italy.
