Drew's Tasting Note

Red berries on the nose with a hint of spice. On the palate, strawberries and redcurrants with a lick of lemon. Very refreshing in its youth.

The Winery

The Beqaa Valley in Lebanon has been home to viticulture for over 5,000 years, and Massaya is one of its most important modern chapters. Michel Ghosn purchased the Tanaïl estate as a countryside retreat in the early 1970s, but it was abandoned during the Lebanese civil war. When brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn returned in the early 1990s, they set about reclaiming the land, planting vineyards and establishing an Arak distillery. Visits to wineries in France led to partnerships with the Hébrard family of Bordeaux and the Brunier family of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Massaya was established in 1998 (the first new winery to open after the civil war) at a time when fewer than a handful of wineries remained in Lebanon. Today, there are over 45, and Massaya's founding marked the beginning of that revival.
