Drew's Tasting Note

Luscious aromas of honey, pineapple and ripe pear, from Sémillon grapes left to dry out on the vine. On the palate, vibrant acidity keeps the sweetness beautifully in check, leading to a long, tangy finish of marmalade.

The Winery

Martin Meinert's path to winemaking began in journalism before he switched to study oenology at Stellenbosch University. After graduating in 1984 and gaining experience at Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux and at wineries in Chile, California, and Australia, he purchased the Devon Crest farm in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch, in 1987. The winery was built in 1990, and the first commercial vintage was released in 1997. The estate now covers 16 hectares planted with Bordeaux varieties on decomposed granite soils. Wines are fermented with natural yeasts and aged in French oak, with production deliberately kept small. The distinctive labels draw on the Meinert family's printing heritage in Namibia, and the wine names, often playful and personal, reflect the same sense of character and storytelling that runs through everything Martin does.
