Drew's Tasting Note

An expressive nose of ripe cranberries, hedgerow blackberries, and blackcurrants, hints of mocha and baking spice. Those dark berry fruits are accentuated on the palate with layers of rich, savoury dark chocolate and beautifully integrated tannins. Elegant, fresh, and complex, with a delectably long finish. Very drinkable now, but with terrific cellaring potential.

The Winery

Originally named Monte Bello Winery, Ridge was established in the late 1800s in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Silicon Valley. After being abandoned and then revived in the late 1940s, Monte Bello was renamed Ridge Vineyards in 1962. The first Zinfandel was produced two years later, from vines dating back to the 19th century. Paul Draper joined in 1969 and shaped the winery's now world-class reputation, built around what Ridge calls a pre-industrial philosophy; avoiding modern additives and industrial processing in favour of traditional pre-Prohibition techniques, organic and sustainable viticulture, and natural yeasts and malolactic bacteria. Their simple, iconic labels list what goes into each wine.
