Drew's Tasting Note

Delicate aromas of apricots and nectarines with floral, mineral and smoky notes. A refreshing palate with terrific depth and balance. Give time in your glass for the flavours to flourish, as they reflect the nose with added citrus and hints of salinity. A lovely, long finish.

Producer: Tentenublo | Vintage: 2021 | From: Rioja Alavesa, Spain | Alcohol: 13.0 | Style: medium-bodied white, still | Grape: Malvasia, Macabeo (Viura)

The Winery

One of the leading names among the new generation of winemakers in Rioja is Roberto Oliván. At the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria mountains in Spain is the village of Viñaspre, near Lanciego. Here, Oliván has accumulated many small vineyard plots, and the grapes for his Tentenublo wines are hand-picked from a few of these high-altitude sites. Oliván works organically and uses native yeast fermentation, ageing his wines in new French oak barrels. The name ‘Tentenublo’ comes from the ringing of bells that ward off hailstorms that would ruin the harvest in the Rioja villages, and it makes a playful cartoon appearance on the wine labels.
