The Winery

Thelema Mountain Vineyards was established in 1983 when Gyles Webb left behind a career as an accountant in Durban to pursue winemaking, purchasing the estate on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The first wines were released in 1988 and by the mid-1990s had become some of the most sought-after in South Africa. In 2002, the Webb family extended their reach into the cool Elgin region with a second property, whose fruit is vinified at Thelema and bottled under the Sutherland label, with a minimum intervention approach in the cellar running through both ranges.
