Drew's Tasting Note

Hedgerow black fruit on the nose. Rich, concentrated blackberry and plum on the palate, integrating beautifully with dark chocolate, cracked black pepper and toasted vanilla oak flavours. Glorious long finish. A wine for food and one that needs time to breathe in the glass if you cannot decant.

Producer: Vega Sicilia | Vintage: 2016 | From: Toro, Spain | Alcohol: 14.5 | Size: 75cl | Style: full-bodied red, still | Grape: Tempranillo

The Winery

Pintia is owned by the prestigious Vega Sicilia estate but sits 60 miles west of its famous parent in the Toro region. The sandy soils here have proved inhospitable to phylloxera (the insect pest that devastated European viticulture in the 19th century), meaning that two-thirds of the vines grow on their original rootstock, an increasingly rare distinction. The result is Tempranillo in its most authentic local form, known here as Tinta de Toro, which produces wines of real character and intensity that can only come from Toro.
